Douglass Academy (DAC) in Wilmington, N.C. is one of four award-winning charter schools in the area managed by the Roger Bacon Academy (RBA). Our organization is dedicated to providing the highest quality educational experience in a safe, spirited and morally strong environment. Our mission is to teach the rules and expectations for effective expression and communication in the arts and sciences, to communicate, by these arts and sciences, our understanding of the universe and our role in it and to instill a love of learning and discovery, and a dedication to health, truth and virtue. Our researched-based Direct Instruction curriculum begins with reading by phonics and writing with attention to penmanship, spelling, grammar, and style. Mathematics, science, music, and art also receive emphasis in the basics with examples and techniques from time-honored classical sources. The children gain a solid base of knowledge, well-grounded in the intellectual, aesthetic, and moral traditions of western civilization.
At Douglass Academy we have an overarching mission to provide the finest educational foundation for the children of our community. We expect our employees to come to work prepared with the tools to teach and a desire to never stop seeking to improve themselves as individuals and as valued members of our CDS family. We also expect our employees to have an unwavering commitment to make a difference, to seek to understand the children within our reach, and have a compassionate heart to never give up helping a child reach his or her potential. We believe every child can learn when properly taught. Our school’s Direct Instruction teaching method provides high behavioral and academic standards for students, as well as specific methods and support staff for managing behavior and ensuring academic success. As a result, you will have the rewarding opportunity to witness and create amazing student transformations. Every kid needs a champion and we believe you are just the right person to inspire the children at Charter Day School.
With us, you’ll earn a full-time salary and benefits package by working only ten months each year. Our benefits package includes medical, dental and life insurance, among others. Our retirement plan matches up to three percent of your 401K contributions and, unlike district schools, you own your account—not the state! And be sure to ask about our childcare and pet insurance options. Our schools match the state teacher pay while providing semi-monthly paychecks year-round. You’ll start with paid time off days, unlike the accrual system in district schools, and can be reimbursed for PTO days you don’t use. We also save you the cost of teacher association dues, which are mandatory at district schools. Our unique educational program means that we promote from within. We offer a dedicated teacher support department of curriculum and instructional specialists to provide year-round coaching and annual training. We also participate in the state’s Teacher Residency Program, which allows individuals with non-teaching bachelor’s degrees to teach for us while obtaining licensure.
We have a Beginning Teacher Coordinator who leads and oversees the Beginning Teaching and Mentor programs.
