Surry County Schools enjoys a community atmosphere where relationships are paramount. Our 19 schools are a great source of community pride, with 11 elementary schools, three traditional middle schools, one magnet middle school, three traditional high schools and one early college high school. Five hundred and forty-two volunteers donated 22,341 hours of service to our schools. We have 7,762 students enrolled in pre-kindergarten through high school.
Through relationships with all students, families and community, we are committed to empowering our youth to grow as citizen leaders and to achieve their dreams.
The Surry County School District is a child-centered, progressive school system with an emphasis on 21st century skills based on the establishment of trusting and caring relationships. Teachers enjoy and benefit from the power of professional learning communities with a strong sense of teacher efficacy. Surry County Schools prides itself on supporting all educators to live, learn and lead in a progressive learning environment.
Surry County Schools is currently partnering with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to establish a teacher residency program in Surry County Schools. Teacher residents are college graduates who are paid a stipend of $35,000 to complete a one-year, full-time internship in a high-need school while completing coursework for a master’s degree in teaching. In exchange for the financial support during the residency year, residents agree to teach for at least three years in a high need school in Surry County following graduation.
Surry County Schools offers a comprehensive salary, supplement and benefits package to our teachers. Surry County Schools is committed to developing leaders across our entire school community, students, teachers, administrators and staff. Surry County Schools is the only traditional public school district in the state of North Carolina implementing a PK-13 leadership framework for all. This includes developing all members of our school community to nurture their leadership capacity.
Surry County Schools offers career readiness pathways and numerous options for students in STEM, CTE and the arts. Students are also eligible to participate in paid and unpaid internships to further develop their career interests and exploration. The Next Generation Career Academy is designed to put students to work in local businesses where they get hands-on experience and relevant career opportunities.
