About

Elizabeth City State University, a public institution, is a constituent of the University of North Carolina System. The mission of ECSU is to promote economic, social and environmental progress for the citizens of northeastern North Carolina, the state and nation.

ECSU is committed to the highest quality education by maintaining a rigorous focus on academic excellence through liberal arts programs and using innovative and flexible technology-based instruction models to enhance signature areas:  integrating technology with education, improving human health and wellness, and advancing the natural and aviation sciences. Through teaching, research and community engagement, the institution’s rich heritage and its current multicultural student-centered focus provide a firm foundation for its endeavors.

ECSU is an NC Promise campus committed to providing an affordable education. The NC Promise Tuition Plan means students pay $500 per semester for NC residents and $2500 per semester for out-of-state, dramatically reducing the expense of college. NC Promise does not affect required fees and other costs of attendance.

The Department of Education offers undergraduate programs to prepare students for a BS degree in Education, Licensure Only and Residency License.  All education programs are state and nationally accredited by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

Joshua Mallory

The Teacher Education Program at ECSU was the most enriching process of my academic career. As an aspiring educator, two of the best qualities of the education I received at ECSU were the professors and the class sizes. My professors were extremely knowledgeable of the trends and current initiatives within the public school systems, and my class sizes were small enough to address my inquiries, but large enough for true collaboration and critical thinking to take place for all learners.

Program Info

The Educator Preparation Program at Elizabeth City State University serves as a catalyst for you to attain your dream of becoming a fully licensed teacher. The Department of Education prepares candidates to become teacher leaders with a mission to recruit, retain and prepare candidates for North Carolina state educator licensure. Initial and advanced preparation program candidates are assessed at designated transition points to ensure compliance with university, state and national standards.

Today's teachers (PK-12) must be extremely knowledgeable of the curriculum, understand the many roles of assessment, and be able to create new and better ways of assessing. Additionally, teachers must be able to think critically and objectively when presented with situations as a novice and must be prepared to meet challenges to ensure that all students are college and/or career ready. ECSU provides all the tools for successful teaching.
