I would tell a fellow teacher seeking licensure from Stanly Community College, that it's an ideal program for someone looking for affordability, a program that cares about the well-being of their students trying to work in the field, and a program that allows you to learn what is needed while still having time for your family. It means an opportunity to seek a license for education, the non-traditional route for individuals with a passion for teaching but seeking a career after receiving a bachelor's degree in a different field.

Britney Huntley, Elementary Education Residency Licensure, 2026

It is at our own pace; the material is very helpful and useful as we are teaching. The way that the program is set up clearly has teachers in mind, along with being understanding of the workload we have, and it allows us to not be as overwhelmed since we are currently teaching.

Madison Adams, Elementary Education Residency Licensure, 2026

It’s completely online and allows me to balance teaching in a classroom with my required courses.

Finally! A residency licensure program designed BY teachers FOR teachers. The Department of K-12 Education at Stanly Community College offers a personal, professional and streamlined pathway to obtain a North Carolina initial teaching license in elementary education. National board-certified teachers and former principals with decades of experience in the classroom guide you through 18 hrs of coursework, the edTPA and required licensure exams. While the coursework is fully online, residency licensure teachers enjoy personal edTPA guidance and bi-monthly support sessions. You will celebrate victories with your group, work through challenges and encourage others to continue growing as professional educators.

Designed to complement what teachers are already doing in their classrooms, you have three years to complete all licensure requirements but can choose a faster pace. Stanly Community College is passionate about its mission to see teachers achieve licensure- every step of the way. You can apply for the residency licensure program in fall or spring.
