The program is made up of 4 parts:

15 credit hours of Pedagogy Courses:

• MUSC 168: Basic Conducting, 3 hrs
• MUSC 226: Winds and Percussion Techniques, 3 hrs
• MUSC 227: Strings, Piano and Voice Techniques, 3 hrs
• MUSC 228: Advanced Problems, 3 hrs
• MUSC 309: Advanced Lessons in Conducting, 3 hrs

15 credit hours of Core Education Courses

• EDUC 532: Introduction to Development and Learning, 3 hrs
• EDUC 615: Schools and Community Collaboration, 3 hrs
• EDUC 689: Foundations of Special Education, 3 hrs

12 credit hours of Student Teaching

• EDUC 593: Student Teaching, 12 hrs

2 credit hours of Education Workshop Seminar

• EDUC 601: Education Workshops, 2 hrs

Learning to teach occurs through practice. Lessons are learned in interactions over time, requiring both the opportunity to act and space to reflect. One aspect that makes our program stand out is our teacher candidates’ engagement in fieldwork and residencies with local schools, where they will observe, participate and teach.

Prospective music teachers complete a Bachelor of Music degree and, along the way, apply for acceptance into the School of Education’s undergraduate licensure program. Prospective music education students share course, studio and ensemble work with all other variants of the BM degree program and are thus on a dual pathway to become professional musicians and professional educators. Our practicums are under constant revision, designed to provide you with the optimal mix of theory, practice and mentorship, and to ensure you are always safe to practice and ready to learn.

You will be paired with a mentor teacher who will help guide you through your student teaching experience. The practicum experiences and the full-time internship will provide you an opportunity to integrate theory and practice, to demonstrate skills in a structured, supportive environment, and to enhance your strengths and improve upon your weaknesses. You will gain experience and develop professional relationships with established teachers in a primary and secondary area.
