Year 1
MAT Students complete the Tier 1 courses, which leads to an initial teaching license. The courses consist of content methods classes. After completing Tier 1, students may choose to continue to Tier 2, which leads to a Master of Arts degree. 

Post-Baccalaureate Residency Licensure students take courses needed to meet licensure requirements. 

Year 2
During the second year, MAT students complete the Tier 2 courses, which lead to a Master of Arts degree. These courses focus on advanced level education content. 

MAT classes require a regular clinical component, which works to help students apply academic knowledge to real classroom situations. Additionally, students are required to complete a supervised practicum experience in an assigned K-6 classroom (analogous to student teaching in traditional undergraduate teacher education program).

Post-Baccalaureate Residency Licensure program students are teachers working in North Carolina public schools. 

Throughout the coursework and during clinical experiences, MAT students are provided with a variety of experiences and opportunities to work with students from a wide range of backgrounds.

The Wingate MAT and Post-Baccalaureate Residency Licensure programs provide students with a personal and ongoing connection to the program director, professors and professionals in the field. During the semester when students complete their practicums, each student is assigned a university supervisor and clinical educator or mentor to support and guide them.

The Wingate University School of Education faculty and staff review student learning and program goals annually to ensure that our programs are providing the preparation our students need to successfully enter the education profession. We partner with local school districts to ensure that our students have quality experiences in both the university classroom and in K-12 classrooms. Our Teacher Education Committee consists of stakeholders from all aspects of the professional educator community. Members of this committee continuously monitor and review our programs.
