Belmont Abbey College is a small, Catholic, Benedictine liberal arts institution. We find our center in Jesus Christ, and believe in the development of the whole person—in mind, body and spirit. Our mission is to provide an education that will enable our students to lead lives of integrity, succeed professionally, become responsible citizens and be a blessing to themselves and others.
The student body consists of over 1,500 students. 82 percent of traditional students live on campus, representing nearly 20 countries and over 30 states.
The Abbey surrounded me with a prayerful, loving and welcoming environment while providing me with an education that will take me through life. I couldn’t have asked for more from a college.
Belmont Abbey's Education graduates are heavily recruited for career teaching positions because of the Elementary Education program's well-known reputation for quality and excellence. One distinction of our Elementary Education bachelor's degree is class size: students study in a close-knit cohort of no more than 20 classmates who complete their entire professional sequence (licensure program) together.
The merit of a highly-individualized environment can be recognized in the quality of learning and application, reflected in the fact that many Elementary Education BA graduates from Belmont Abbey College are hired as teachers during the student teaching experience or shortly following graduation.
Additionally, for more than three decades, the Abbey's Elementary Licensure Program has maintained a strong reputation with regional and non-regional schools for graduating teachers who are outstanding classroom leaders.
Students at Belmont Abbey College have reduced the cost of their program using these methods. Check with Belmont Abbey College to see if you can, too!

Program Hallmarks
At Belmont Abbey College we believe that being an elementary school teacher is not only a job, but a calling. Our students gain invaluable experience teaching in real classrooms in our local community, which prepares them for their future teaching careers.
Students are required to take a Student Teaching Seminar (three hours) to prepare them for their student teaching experience, followed by nine hours (over three semesters) student teaching at a local school. This in-class experience proves critical to the success of our students in the classroom and in their career as a whole.
Gaston County Schools and surrounding districts are comprised of an array of diversity—racially, ethnically and in terms of socioeconomic realities. Our teacher candidates experience field opportunities with diverse populations before deciding on the student teaching location that calls to them academically, socially and emotionally.
Each instructor in our teacher preparation program comes to higher education following a successful journey in classrooms where they honed their skills of teaching and learning. We believe that all field experience should be supervised by full-time faculty who know students very well, having already spent extensive time with them in our Abbey classrooms and in advising settings.
We take our instructor-student relationships seriously and value all teacher candidates as we help them prepare for a satisfying lifetime career in public and/or private school classrooms.
At Belmont Abbey College, we believe in continual formative assessment of both students and our program. Our doors are open for teacher candidates to be part of the planning of teaching and learning in our classrooms and field opportunities. We believe preparation of teachers is a dynamic process, ever changing as research and student needs are considered.
