Located Murfreesboro, North Carolina, Chowan University is just over an hour drive to Virginia Beach and to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Chowan University follows the time-honored tradition of smaller, church-related universities where one finds such advantages as a sense of belonging to a university family, instruction based on Christian values, economy in tuition and boarding, and interest in the individual on the part of the faculty and administration. The Chowan University curricular emphasis on ethics provides opportunities for students to participate in discussions and activities that promote freedom of inquiry, character formation, and ethical actions in their personal and professional lives. Chowan University seeks to make intelligent use of the newest technology in the process of learning, by facilitating student learning in significant ways and by enhancing student/faculty relationships and communication. This commitment to communication technology in a liberal arts setting demonstrates Chowan’s educational mission to integrate effective career preparation with a strong liberal arts education.
I am currently an instructional technology coach for Norfolk Public Schools. All of the skills I gained for this new position were gained through Chowan's M.Ed. program. I am in my second year of a doctoral program in Indiana University, although the program is more rigorous than expected, the research conducted during the M.Ed. program did provide a foundation of research philosophy and expectations that have allowed me to successfully progress through a year and a half of doctoral studies. Financially, graduating from the M.Ed. program substantially increased my pay as an educator and as an instructional specialist.
The Chowan University School of Education is dedicated to graduate students who are effective, highly qualified teachers and who are equipped with instructional strategies and pedagogy capable of educating all learners in a continuously changing world. The strong core curriculum, along with professional and specialty area studies offered to pre-service teachers at Chowan University, provides prospective educators with knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary for working with diverse students and learning environments. Opportunities are provided for candidates to learn and assess theories and principles of best practices not only in the university setting, but also in collaboration with classroom teachers and other professionals who guide them through practical application in real-world settings.

Program Hallmarks
Chowan University students complete numerous fieldwork assignments beginning in Introduction to Education. Each of these assignments is developed to help the students see the area they are studying in that class. Fieldwork assignments range from 8-12 hours. Before a student is ready to student teach, he or she will have spent time observing various teachers, grade levels, teaching styles and classroom management styles, and will work with the Education faculty and school officials to determine a placement where both the student teacher and the school can benefit.
Students at Chowan are offered coursework in special education, learning disabilities and multicultural education. Students complete fieldwork assignments in each of these areas. The local schools where the students complete their fieldwork offer a number of programs that meet the needs of diverse learners.
Chowan University offers a small program where faculty know all of the students by name. The University's hallmark "Im In" program invites students to visit faculty often. Students are mentored throughout the program by a small, but dedicated group of faculty. These faculty also support the SNCAE student organization and the honor society, Kappa Delta PI. In Student Teaching, students meet in a weekly seminar to discuss topics, successes and concerns with one another, their student teaching supervisors and the university’s fieldwork coordinator.
To ensure that Chowan University students receive the best possible educational opportunities, the School of Education is associated with NCATE and is preparing for a CAEP visit in the spring 2020. The School of Education is a member of the NC ACTE, as well as the AACTE. Individual members of the faculty belong to numerous other professional and service-related organizations. The School of Education has purchased programs and materials, and offers a course that assists students with completing the professional assessments (Praxis Core, Praxis II, Pearson, edTPA). The School of Education provides these materials to the students at no cost.
